Be Careful What You Wish For
Peace Has A Price

“Iie. No I…well I woke up one day with them.” Not wishing to press the issue any further Toya dropped the subject. The radio in the corner still rasped with events of the war. The Japanese had won countless victories in China, but that would mean nothing if the Allies launched an invasion on Japanese soil. “You, are worried about something?”

“I’m worried about this war. My-my brother died three years ago in June. I can’t seem to get past it.”

“Ah yes, at the battle of Midway?”

“Hai.” Tears were starting to form in the corner of Toya’s eyes. He rubbed at them with the back of his hand before continuing. “I just wish the damn war was over, why can’t we just have peace? Is that so wrong?” He glanced over at the man beside him, trying to avoid his yellow eyes. The man’s visage altered so quickly it took Toya by surprise. He seemed so utterly depressed so suddenly Toya almost cried for him. “I’m sorry, did I strike a nerve?”

“You have wished, and I have to make it so.” So quiet was his voice that Toya had to strain to hear him. “I am sorry Toya, but I must do my duty.”

“I…wished? What are you talking about? What duty? What are you talking about?” The man finished his drink then got up to leave. “Matté! Wait! What do you mean?” The man walked out the door and Toya hurried to follow him, hastily throwing some money down to pay for his drinks. He caught up with the man just outside, where he was staring at the sky. “Kudusai…Please, tell me what you meant earlier. What wish are you talking about?” It was some time before the man answered him.

“Did you not wish for peace earlier Toya-san? Is that not what you want?”

“Well…yes. I wish nothing more than for this war to end so good people like my brother won’t die. I want peace on this earth.” They sat there in silence for what seemed like an eternity before the man finally spoke again.

“In the morning, you will understand. Your wish will be revealed. Oyasumi Toya-san.” Toya watched as the man walked off, and suddenly felt very alone. He headed home, his head roaring with thoughts.
